One of the biggest differences between winning and losing poker players is starting-hand selection. Every hand you choose to play creates another decision—and another opportunity to make an expensive mistake.
Playing fewer hands allows you to enter pots with stronger ranges, make easier post-flop decisions, and put more pressure on opponents when you do decide to play.
You don't make money by winning the most pots. You make money by making better decisions in the pots you choose to play.
Not Every Hand Deserves Action
Hands that look playable can become expensive when played from the wrong position. Your range should generally be tighter from early position and gradually expand as you move closer to the button.

Premium strength with excellent high-card and post-flop potential.
Q♣ Q♦
A premium pair that should normally be played aggressively before the flop.
K♣ 9♦
Can look attractive, but is frequently dominated when facing action.
J♠ 6♥
Weak combinations create difficult post-flop decisions and unnecessary losses.
Your Cards Aren't the Whole Story
The later you act, the more information you have. On the button you have seen what most of the table has decided before you make your move. That information has real value.
Early Position: Play a tighter, stronger range.
Middle Position: Begin adding selected playable hands.
Late Position: You can widen your range when the action and opponents allow it.
Stop Paying to See What Happens
Many recreational players enter pots simply because they are bored, haven't played a hand recently, or believe they have already invested money in the blinds.
Those aren't strategic reasons to play a hand.
Before putting chips into the pot, ask yourself:
✓ How strong is my hand for my position?
✓ Who has already entered the pot?
✓ Am I raising for a reason?
✓ What will I do if someone reraises?
✓ Am I playing this hand because it's profitable—or because I'm impatient?
Patience Creates Profit
Folding isn't passive poker. Good folds protect your stack and preserve your chips for situations where you have an advantage.
Your goal isn't to participate in every hand. Your goal is to enter the right pots, from the right positions, with a plan.
During your next session, consciously eliminate the weakest hands from your starting range. Pay particular attention to the marginal hands you are tempted to play from early position.
