Control the Pot With a Purpose
Strong poker isn't about building the biggest pot possible. It's about building the right-sized pot for your hand, position and opponent.
Before betting, ask yourself: What am I trying to accomplish with this bet? Are you betting for value, protection, as a bluff, or to control the size of the pot?
Don't choose a bet size simply because it feels right. Know what you want your bet to accomplish before putting chips into the pot.
Match the Size to the Situation
Different situations require different bet sizes. Your sizing should consider the board, your opponent's range, stack depth and what worse hands can realistically continue.
Keep Worse Hands In
On dry boards, a smaller bet can often accomplish the same goal while keeping weaker hands in the pot.
Charge Draws
On coordinated boards, larger bets can extract value while making opponents pay to chase draws.
Not Every Strong Hand Needs a Huge Pot
Medium-strength hands often benefit from keeping the pot manageable. Checking behind or using smaller sizing can protect you from creating an unnecessarily large pot.
Remember: checking is not always weakness. Sometimes it is the best way to preserve value and reach showdown.
Big hand, big pot is a useful starting point — but medium-strength hands usually prefer medium-sized pots.
Ask These Questions Before You Bet
- Am I betting for value or as a bluff?
- What worse hands can call me?
- What better hands might fold?
- How does the board affect both ranges?
- What happens to the pot if I get called?
- What will my stack-to-pot ratio look like on the next street?
If you can answer those questions, your bet sizing becomes a strategic decision instead of a guess.
Every Bet Should Tell a Story
The best players don't just decide whether to bet. They decide why they are betting and how much best accomplishes that goal.
Control the pot when appropriate, build it when you have the advantage and make every chip you put forward have a purpose.
