You raised before the flop. Now what? Learn when a continuation bet builds pressure, when checking is better, and how board texture changes everything.
A C-Bet Needs a Reason
A continuation bet — commonly called a c-bet — is a bet made on the flop after you were the pre-flop aggressor.
But raising before the flop does not mean you should automatically bet every flop.
Strong players ask: Who does this board favor, what worse hands can call, and what better hands might fold?
Don't continuation bet simply because you raised pre-flop. Bet because the board, opponent and situation give the bet a purpose.
Some Flops Are Better to Bet Than Others
Dry boards such as A-7-2 rainbow often favor the pre-flop raiser because there are fewer strong draws available.
Connected boards such as 9-8-7 with two cards of the same suit interact with many more hands and require greater caution.

Dry board. Few draws. Your pre-flop range can represent many strong hands.
9♠ 8♠ 7♦
Connected board. Many draws and made hands can continue against you.
Ask Three Questions Before Betting
1. Who does the board favor?
Consider whether the flop connects more strongly with your range or your opponent's range.
2. What worse hands will call?
Value betting works when weaker hands can realistically continue.
3. What better hands might fold?
A bluff needs a realistic chance of forcing stronger hands out.
If you cannot explain why you are betting, checking is often better than making an automatic continuation bet.
You Don't Always Need a Big Bet
On many dry boards, a smaller continuation bet can accomplish the same goal as a larger bet while risking fewer chips.
On coordinated boards, larger bets may sometimes be appropriate when betting for value or protection — but the decision should come from the board and opponent, not habit.
Bet With Purpose
Continuation betting is powerful because you often enter the flop with the initiative.
But initiative is not permission to bet automatically.
Evaluate the board, opponent, ranges and purpose of your bet before putting more chips into the pot.
The best c-bet isn't the one you make most often. It's the one made for the right reason.
